Understanding Health, Medical & Physical Accessibility Accommodations

Health, medical, and physical accessibility accommodations ensure that students with physical disabilities or medical conditions can safely participate in school. These accommodations address barriers related to mobility, stamina, medical needs, and physical access to the school environment.

Accommodations may include wheelchair-accessible routes, elevator access, adaptive PE, modified schedules to account for fatigue or medical appointments, nurse access for medication, and permission to carry water or snacks for medical conditions. Some students need adjusted attendance policies or homebound instruction during flare-ups.

If your child has a medical condition that affects their school day, make sure the IEP includes a health plan and specifies what staff need to know. Be clear about emergency procedures, medication schedules, and signs that your child needs medical attention. These details protect your child and give school staff confidence.

Found the right accommodations? Make sure they’re in the IEP.

Upload your child’s IEP and we’ll check which accommodations are listed, which are missing, and what to request.
