Understanding Reading & Literacy Accommodations

Reading and literacy accommodations support students who struggle with decoding, fluency, or comprehension. These accommodations do not lower expectations. They provide access to grade-level content by removing barriers caused by a disability.

Common reading accommodations include audiobooks, text-to-speech software, highlighted or enlarged text, and graphic organizers for comprehension. Some students benefit from having a peer or adult read passages aloud, while others need additional time to process written material.

If your child has a reading-related disability like dyslexia, the IEP team should consider accommodations across all subjects, not just English Language Arts. A student who struggles with reading will also need support in science, social studies, and even math when word problems are involved.
