IEP Progress Monitoring in Kansas
How often should you receive IEP progress reports in Kansas?
Kansas requires IEPs to describe how progress toward each annual goal will be measured and how and when periodic progress reports will be provided to parents (K.A.R. 91-40-17(a)(3); 34 CFR 300.320(a)(3)). Progress must be reported to parents at least as frequently as report cards are issued to nondisabled students, which typically means quarterly reports in Kansas school districts. The IEP must specify the measurement method for each goal (e.g., curriculum-based measures, observation, data collection, standardized assessments). KSDE encourages districts to use evidence-based progress monitoring tools and to use collected data to drive instructional decisions. If a student is not making expected progress toward goals, the IEP team must be convened to address the lack of progress and revise the IEP as needed (K.A.R. 91-40-18(a)). Kansas's MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support) framework, promoted by KSDE, supports systematic progress monitoring as part of both general and special education practice.
