Understanding Organization & Executive Functioning Accommodations

Executive functioning accommodations support the cognitive skills students need to plan, organize, manage time, and complete tasks independently. These skills develop at different rates, and many disabilities directly affect them.

Accommodations in this area include visual schedules, assignment checklists, color-coded folders, regular binder or backpack checks, breaking long assignments into smaller steps with due dates, and using a planner or digital organizer. Some students need an adult to help them get started on tasks or check in during longer assignments.

Executive functioning challenges are often mistaken for laziness or lack of motivation. If your child frequently loses homework, forgets assignments, or struggles to start tasks, ask the IEP team about organizational supports. These accommodations teach skills while providing the scaffolding your child needs right now.
