Understanding Time Management & Transitions Accommodations
Time management and transition accommodations help students who struggle with moving between activities, managing their time during tasks, or adjusting to changes in routine. Transitions are one of the most common triggers for anxiety and behavioral challenges in school.
Common accommodations include visual timers, advance warnings before transitions (e.g., "five minutes until we switch"), transition objects or activities, extra time to move between classes, and consistent daily routines. Some students benefit from a written or visual schedule they can reference throughout the day.
If your child has difficulty with transitions, ask the IEP team to be specific. "Provide transition support" is too vague. Instead, request specific strategies like "Give a 5-minute and 2-minute verbal warning before activity changes" or "Allow the student to leave class 2 minutes early to avoid crowded hallways."
