IEP Evaluation Process in Oklahoma

How long does Oklahoma have to complete an IEP evaluation?

Oklahoma's evaluation timeline is 45 school days from written parental consent to completion of the MEEGS — this exceeds the federal 60 calendar day requirement and is state-specific policy. The RED (Review of Existing Data) must be completed within 10 school days of consent. Reevaluations must occur at least every three years (triennial), or more frequently if conditions warrant or parent requests. The MEEGS team determines eligibility using Oklahoma Eligibility Standards; all assessment data must be within one calendar year to be considered current. Oklahoma uses EDPlan for documenting evaluations.

What Oklahoma Requires

Initial evaluation timeline: 45 school days from written parental consent for evaluation — Oklahoma state policy exceeds the federal 60 calendar day requirement (Oklahoma Special Education Policies & Procedures 2024, Ch. 5)

RED (Review of Existing Data) must be completed within 10 school days of obtaining written parental consent; identifies existing data meeting requirements and gaps requiring additional assessments (Oklahoma Special Education Policies & Procedures 2024, Ch. 5)

All assessment components must be conducted within one calendar year to be considered current for MEEGS eligibility determination (Oklahoma Evaluation & Eligibility Handbook 2024)

Reevaluation: must occur at least every 3 years unless parent and LEA agree it is unnecessary; must occur if conditions warrant or parent/teacher requests; must not occur more than once per year unless parent and LEA agree (34 C.F.R. § 300.303)

Evaluation must be comprehensive and conducted by a multidisciplinary team with members qualified by discipline; team determines eligibility using Oklahoma Eligibility Standards criteria (Oklahoma Evaluation & Eligibility Handbook 2024)

Out-of-state transfer: within 10 school days, complete RED and determine if data meets Oklahoma criteria; if sufficient, complete Initial MEEGS; if insufficient, obtain consent for additional assessments and complete full evaluation within 45 school days (Oklahoma Special Education Policies & Procedures 2024, Ch. 6, Sec. 2)

Prior Written Notice must be provided to parents before conducting or refusing to conduct an evaluation (34 C.F.R. § 300.503)
