Understanding Math Support Accommodations
Math accommodations help students access mathematical concepts when a disability creates barriers to learning. These might address difficulties with calculation, number sense, visual-spatial reasoning, or the language demands of word problems.
Common math accommodations include using a calculator for computation, providing graph paper to keep numbers aligned, allowing extra time, and breaking multi-step problems into smaller parts. Some students benefit from manipulatives (physical objects for counting) or visual models.
When requesting math accommodations, be specific about where your child struggles. A student with dyscalculia may need a calculator for basic facts but can reason through concepts well. A student with ADHD may be able to calculate but loses track during multi-step problems. The right accommodation targets the specific barrier.
